Camera comments

M & I are thinking about buying a Canon Rebel. We have a little point & shoot digital Olympus that we bought right after B was born. It was the best we could buy when we had almost no money. It's ailing these days (thanks to a drop on the hardwood floor), and now that we have ever-so-slightly more than "no" money, we're thinking of shelling out for something nicer. M already has a film Canon, so the lenses we already own would be compatible.

My question is this: Does anyone recommend AGAINST the Canon Rebel? I've heard a ton of raves about it, but never really heard anything negative. Anyone out there have one and hate it?

I can't believe I've managed to get pictures of B two days in a row! These are fresh from the craptacular Olympus, taken just about an hour ago.

I'd get the Xsi.

We have the XT and I want to upgrade to the Xsi.

Check with camera officianados, but sometimes it's better to buy the body only and buy a better lens than the stock one?

just a thought.

I got a Rebel XTI this fall; I haven't had much time to do more than use the automatic functions, but so far I love it. I bought it on ebay; it was a factory demo model and came with a year's warranty; it showed no signs of wear and the price was much more reasonable. They guarranteed that it was in new operating condition. The name of the seller was Cameta Camera.

I also bought a Sigma 70 300 lens and was able to get some great shots in the mountains and also on our trip in the New England states this fall. So far I have nothing negative to report on either the camera or the Sigma lens. The lens that came with the camera is fine for the typical pictures, but I also wanted the 70/300 lens for the long distance shots. My method of buying things includes going to Amazon.com, looking up the product and reading the comments left by users, and sometimes Amazon has the best price, especially if you can get free shipping.

My main disappointment was signing up for a photography class at a photography store in Boulder - $55 worth of nothing!!! I bought the book "Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI for Dummies" - it is a great resource but I haven't had the time to really absorb everything about f-stops and all of that. I'm hoping to get into it more this winter. Good luck on your purchase!
